Father P.A. Martin
Title
Father P.A. Martin
Subject
Father Martin, Marist Father, Parish Priest of Hokitika
Description
Father Martin was appointed to Hokitika Parish in 1868, and he decided to seek out a community of nuns to undertake the education of the Catholic children in his Parish. The New Zealand Education Act of 1877 provided for funds for secular education, but not for Parish schools. As a result, the Catholic communities in New Zealand relied on religious orders, both male and female, to provide Catholic education for their children. Father Martin is shown here with a group from the Hokitika boys' school.
