Description

ARRIVAL OF SISTERS OF MERCY IN NEW ZEALAND.
New Zealand Tablet, Vol VI, Issue 283, 4 October 1878, Page 16

the New Zealand Tablet reported that the Sisters had landed at the Bluff, from Melbourne, and were 'intended for the mission at Hokitika.' It describes how Mother Cecilia left Wellington two years previously for the purpose of obtaining aid in Europe for the cause of the Church in New Zealand, and how her call was responded to by the 'devoted band of ladies' who were on their way to set up a new mission in Hokitika. An interesting fact is how Sr. Cecilia and her companion, when visiting Rome, saw a building being demolished, and salvaged some pieces of marble which they brought back to England with them to be used in a sacred building.
