Title

Hokitika Township

Subject

Hokitika in the 1870's

Description

Before the 1860's, Hokitika was a quiet Maori village on the West coast of the Southern island of New Zealand. When gold was discovered there in 1864, thousands left the gold-fields of Australia and rushed to Hokitika to seek their fortune. Within a year the population had increased by 50,000, and by 1866 the town boasted 102 hotels and 3 opera houses, as well as a wharf that accommodated 15 vessels. In 2006 the population was estimated to be 3,078.
