Description

On 1 August, 1878, ten Sisters of Mercy, including eight professed Sisters and two postulants (young women preparing to enter religious life) embarked on the S.S. Garonne at the beginning of their 13,000 mile journey to Hokitika. They were Srs Clare Moloney, (professed 1864); Mechtildes Boland (professed 1869);
Angela O'Keeffe (professed 1858); Cecilia Sheehan (professed 1877); Julianna Ryan (professed 1882); Aloysius McGrath (professed 1874); Gabriel O'Kennedy (professed 1873; and Claver Ryan (professed 1876). The two postulants were Katie Ryan, younger sister of Sr Claver Ryan, and Kate Molony, niece of Sr Clare Molony, and only child of Michael and Honoria Molony of Ennis. Sr Clare Molony, then 34 years old, was the leader of the group and the author of the diary.
