Visit to Cape Town, South Africa
Subject
Arrival at Cape Town, South Africa
Description
On August 27th, 1878, the S.S. Garonne casts anchor at Table Bay, where the Sisters admire views of Table mountain and Devil's Peak. The Bishop of Cape Town, Dr John Leonard (1829-1908) sends a boat to the Garonne to take them ashore for a visit. There they met Mother Dympna Kinsella, prioress of the Dominican convent. The Dominican Sisters had been brought to Cape Town in 1863 by Bishop Griffith, They visited the Catholic Cathedral, which, opened in 1851, is the oldest Catholic Church in South Africa. The Sisters enjoy their visit, and when they return to the ship it is as if they were "again parting from Sainted Erin".
